This report records the impact of internment on Families. Operation Demetrius was a massive NI wide British Army operation carried out on 9-10th August 1971. Almost 350 individuals suspected of involvement in the Irish Republican Army (IRA) were arrested and Interned. Internment is the arrest and imprisonment without trial. The British Army and RUC had this power under the Special Powers Act 1922.
The Civil Rights march on 30 January 1972 which resulted in Bloody Sunday was a protest against internment.
